Sera Voss is a Third Rank Ward-Mason in Kael'Doran, which means she's qualified enough to do the work but not senior enough for anyone to listen when she says the wards are failing. She has been saying it for two years. The senior masons nod politely. The governor changes the subject. The wards keep cracking.

She came to the guild through the technical track rather than the academic one, which is a polite way of saying she learned by fixing things that were already broken instead of studying theory at an institution. This makes her better at practical diagnosis than most of her peers and worse at navigating guild politics. Both of these facts are relevant to her current situation.

Background

Born in the lower terraces of Kael'Doran to a family with no particular connection to magic. Her father ran a metalworking shop that supplied fittings for the ward pylons. She grew up around the infrastructure without understanding what it did, then understood what it did without anyone explaining, which is how most ward-masons describe their aptitude manifesting.

She apprenticed at fifteen, earned Third Rank at twenty-six, and has been stuck there since. Promotion to Second Rank requires a senior sponsor, and sponsors don't attach themselves to people who publicly contradict the governor's position on ward integrity.

Current Situation

The events of "The Lamplighter's Oath" put Sera in a complicated position. She now has evidence that the ward failures are worse than anyone admitted, but the source of that evidence is a street lamp that shouldn't be working. Explaining what she found means explaining how she found it, and that opens questions she isn't ready to answer.
